Building Your Brand

September 26, 2011 1 comment

I was reminded today about the importance of building a solid brand. Barbara, from Boston had called into a radio talk show interview that I was doing, and she wanted to let the host and me know how much she enjoyed answering the questions in my book The Complete Book of Business Plans.

She stated that her husband had left her to raise her three boys on her own, and she had no idea what to do at first. A friend had suggested my book to her and she purchased it with the hopes of writing a business plan, and getting a loan to launch her boutique business.

Barbara completed her plan, and went to the bank to get an SBA guaranteed loan of $10,000 to launch her first boutique. She was calling in to the show let us know that she was opening her third boutique since the first two were so successful; and to let the listeners know about the 130 questions in the book that she had taken the time to answer.

This is so exciting to for me to hear! To have Barbara share her story on answering a few questions…completing a business plan…raising capital for her small business…and the success she has found, is priceless. Way to go Barbara…and congratulations a hundred times over on your success!

Things About You

September 7, 2011 1 comment

In one of my books, Tactical Entrepreneur, I introduced a self assessment called Things About Me. The primary purpose of this worksheet is to take a quick inventory of what makes you, you. How you think about certain things, and what your own personal strengths and weaknesses are. http://www.brianhazelgren.com/tactical_entrepreneur.html

When you take a few minutes to ask yourself a few questions about what your passionate about…or about things you can improve on…or even a reminder of what you are pretty good at, its crazy how you can come up with new ideas. I have been teaching this simple principle for 10 years, and have taken the assessment myself 10 times, and each time I come up with new ideas, new concepts, new possibilities.

Take a few minutes and reflect on what where your own personal strengths and weaknesses are…areas you can improve on…and strengths you can share with others. It’s a brief 30 minute journey that will open up new doors for you. Who knows maybe a hidden talent is lurking beneath the surface just waiting for you to unlock its potential. I believe in you, and so do many others. You have the gift of making a difference in the lives of others and in your own life. It’s time to find out just how special that gift is. Best of luck!

Stay Focused #5

This one is probably the one that is most overlooked, yet is also the most important. We like to be rewarded by others for a job well done…its human nature. The simple fact that we like to be rewarded should tell us that its ok to take some time and give ourselves some small jewel for getting our work completed. An exotic vacation or something as simple as some time to ourselves can be the right ticket!
#5. Reward yourself – you need to give yourself a pat on the back once in a while and reward yourself for your discipline. That can be as simple as blocking out time for you to read a book; see a movie; go out to dinner; go on a vacation; or watch your favorite sitcom.

Stay Focused #2

They may not all work for you, but I have found that when you follow these principles, you stay focused, and you are able to direct your positive energies to the task at hand.

#2. Create and stick to a priority list – sometimes a simple list of priorities can keep you focused on what needs to be accomplished
– and when. I like to have a priority list to refer to when distractions enter the picture…it keeps me…focused.

They may not all work for you, but I have found that when you follow these principles, you stay focused, and you are able to direct your positive energies to the task at hand.
1. Establish well-defined goals – your goals are the foundation of your plan and your plan is the roadmap to lead you to your destiny. Setting goals in not a new concept, but it is a wise principle to use and a habit that you should establish. Remember a goal not written is only a wish.
